A Visit to Glasgow
| 9th-13th April, 2001 |
|
During the Easter holiday, 2001, we took our second city break with the Edinburgh Residence scheme and had three days in their residence in Glasgow. We travelled up to the Lake District on the Sunday and stayed overnight in the New Dungeon Ghyll and then moved on to Glasgow. At this time the foot and mouth outbreak was at its height and, as the pictures show, the absence of livestock in the Lakes was startling. In fact we found the Lakes quite eerie for, coupled with the absence of animals, there was a complete absence of tourists since the footpaths were closed. We really liked Glasgow and preferred it to Edinburgh which we found rather "touristy". The two highlights for us were the Botanic Gardens and the Transport Museum, but there were a whole host of features that made this a very enjoyable break. The Glasgow underground (affectionately known as The Clockwork Orange) was fun, the people were friendly, the shopping centre extensive and the Burrell Collection impressive. The Glasgow Residence was fine, but we were not as impressed by it as we were by the ones in Paris and Edinburgh, it seemed to lack atmosphere.
